Mitigating the Content Quality Mismatch

February 15, 2024

— According to PAMA, it's time for companies to turn old conference rooms into video production resources. —

We have all become connoisseurs of fine content. After sitting through years of endless Zoom meetings and sifting through thousands of hours of YouTube how-to tutorials, we all know what works—and what doesn’t. And yet, as professional audio manufacturers who supply the gear and equipment for the creative economy, we run the risk of looking and feeling woefully out of sync with our customers and their needs when the content that we produce in-house isn’t up to snuff.

Bottom line: As businesses and individually as professionals, we can no longer get away with bad audio feeds and lackluster presentations. Especially when our clients and peers judge our performance and compare our mediocrity against that young talented streamer they were watching right before our meetings.

What Defines a Broadcast Mic in the 21st Century?

September 18, 2023

— What defines a broadcast microphone?

It could be argued that any microphone used for a broadcast purpose fits the bill, but that fails to focus in on the unique needs of broadcasters and the highly sensitive, market-driven efforts that manufacturers are undertaking to deliver what today’s broadcasters need.

In a recent survey conducted by the Professional Audio Manufacturers Alliance (PAMA) of member companies, representatives from major professional audio brands — Shure, Audio-Technica, Harman and Sennheiser — were asked to share their opinions on broadcast mics.

The resulting information reveals certain common threads among these industry leaders: namely, that a broadcast mic should be highly tailored to the end user and their application, with the manufacturer thinking several steps ahead to make the microphone a highly durable tool able to withstand the rigors of everyday use (whether in studio or in the field).

And just as crucially, a broadcast mic should serve as a successful, user-friendly, often nearly transparent or entirely invisible tool that performs as intended in a variety of settings.

March 21, 2022

Customer purchasing habits are shifting. Business models are in flux. And forward-looking companies are rapidly reinventing themselves to adapt to these new realities. And while I got out of the prediction business two years ago when I realized that the crowds’ behaviors were playing by a different set of rules than my crystal ball, if I were to wager – to pick a successful business model that will emerge victorious in the long run – I would say that future success is highly dependent upon owning the direct relationship with the customer while offering unparalleled levels of personalization and customization on the front end, combined with made-to-order processes on the back-end.

Gilbert, Ariz., Sept. 14, 2020 – As the current pandemic continues to throw a wrench into so many institutional learning activities and potentially hinders the interaction between seasoned industry professionals and pro audio students, the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences (CRAS), the premier institution for audio engineering education, continues to provide its students with informative events which buck these current unfortunate trends.

As such, Karen Dunn of KMD Productions recently helped host a Professional Audio Manufacturers Alliance (PAMA) Career Opportunities in Pro Audio Product Companies Panel Zoom session for 50 CRAS students.

“This was a terrific event and was designed as an informational webinar to help CRAS’ near-graduation students learn about the companies that design and manufacture the gear they will be using as their careers advance,” Dunn explained. “There are employment path opportunities inside these companies that can be an excellent complement to a musical career. We were lucky to have senior executives from four of these top-tier brands on our panel as their knowledge and management experience is unrivaled in the industry. It would ordinarily be very difficult for students, or other early-career stage folks, to access these resources.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in the music industry. It has brought silence to clubs, halls, theaters, arenas and stadiums nationwide. Recognizing the need for a helping hand for the unsung heroes of the industry, PAMA has allocated funds to help two organizations that are firmly entrenched in this sector — The Clinic and Crew Nation.
